Vaccination FAQS

Pets add so much joy to our lives. You can give back to your pet by providing him with quality veterinary care. Pet exams, urgent care, emergency veterinarian care, and pet vaccinations are all essential to your pet’s health. These FAQs from Southside Veterinary Hospital in Vero Beach, FL explain more about the importance of vaccinating your pet.

What are pet vaccines?

Pet vaccines are health products that protect pets from life-threatening diseases.  They work by stimulating your pet’s immune system to fight against specific diseases. Some vaccines keep your pet from contracting a disease, while others enable his system to fight off the disease so he can recover.

How vital are vaccinations to my pet’s health?

You never know when your pet will be exposed to a contagious disease. Without protection, your pet could become extremely ill or even die. Pet vaccinations give your pet the protection he needs to live a longer, healthier life. If you live in Vero Beach or the surrounding communities, you can bring your pet to our animal hospital for pet vaccinations.

What vaccinations should I get for my pet?

We recommend all pets get core vaccines to protect them against the most dangerous diseases. For dogs, core vaccines include rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and canine hepatitis. For cats, core vaccines include rabies, feline panleukopenia, feline viral rhinotracheitis, and feline calicivirus. Depending on where you live, we may recommend additional noncore vaccines to protect your pet against diseases he may be exposed to due to his lifestyle.

How often should my pet be vaccinated?

Your veterinarian can personalize a vaccination schedule for your pet conducive to his age, breed, health, location, and lifestyle.

What does my pet’s lifestyle have to do with vaccinations?

Pets that spend more time outdoors or around other pets are at greater risk of exposure to contagious diseases. Naturally, they will need more protection than pets that spend most or all of their time indoors. Your pet’s location can also put him at risk for contracting certain diseases. Customizing your pet’s vaccination schedule enables him to get more accurate protection against diseases.

What are the risks of vaccinating my pet?

Pets have been known to have allergic reactions to vaccines, but these are rare. Allergic reactions may cause swelling, itching, or shortness of breath. Contact our Vero Beach veterinarian immediately if you notice these or any other type of reaction after vaccinating your pet.
