Causes of Pet Ear Infections

Some ear infections result from injury to the ear canal. Others may be because of a foreign body that becomes lodged inside the ear canal. Moisture in the ear and the inability for the free flow of air can lead to ear infections. Excessive wax buildup can create a condition in which an infection can thrive. Immune system problems, such as those caused by diabetes, can cause frequent ear infections. Allergies can also cause ear infections.

Symptoms of a Pet Ear Infection

You may notice your pet pawing at their ears. The animal may shake their heads frequently. There may be a strong odor coming from the ears. The ear tissue may look red and inflamed. You may even see scales or scabs on the ear tissue. A dark-colored discharge may come from the ears. These are signs you should make an appointment with your veterinarian to investigate the problem.

Pet Ear Infection Treatment

During the pet exam, the vet will thoroughly clean the ear to remove wax, dirt, and any debris that may have accumulated in the ear. Oral antibiotics may be prescribed and anti-inflammatory medications recommended. Frequent cleaning of the ears may be advised. Some pets seem to get ear infections frequently or are difficult to eliminate the infection. In these cases, the vet may need to investigate whether allergies or a problem in the ear structure itself is the source of the problem. Medications to control allergy reactions can be helpful for some pets. In some cases, surgery may be needed to correct an abnormality in the ear.
