What to Expect from Your Puppy or Kittens First Exam

Puppy or Kittens First Exam

When you get a new puppy or kitten, there are many things you need to do. People expect to buy food and supplies, get acquainted with your home, start house training, and – of course – cuddle for hours at a time. A trip to your veterinarian’s office is also in order, but this can be a little intimidating when you’re not sure what to expect during your puppy or kitten’s first exam. To help reduce any anxiety, our team at Southside Veterinary Hospital in Vero Beach has put together a quick guide.

Information Gathering

One of the first steps in the exam will include gathering information about your new pet. You might not know all of their medical history and that’s okay. Just share what you do know. You can also share anything you’ve noticed about your pet or any concerns you may have.

Physical Exam

Your pet will also be examined from head to tail. This includes vital signs, dental checks, ear checks, and more to determine your pet’s overall health.

Vaccinations

Puppies and kittens need specific vaccinations to keep them healthy and strong. In most cases, they will be given the first round of these vaccinations at their first appointment.

Developing a Care Plan

Dr. Kilpatrick will lay out a care plan that suits your pet. If there aren’t any concerns, this will likely only include annual exams and routine vaccinations. If our veterinarian or you have any concerns that justify additional appointments, those will be added to the care plan. You will also discuss spaying, neutering, microchipping, and other relevant procedures.

Pet Parent Guidance

Your pet’s exams are for you, too. You can ask any questions you need and our vet will provide tips, recommendations, and guidance to help you be the best pet parent you can be.
